Girl Sunbathing in Driveway Has Head Run Over by Sister's Truck, Killed

A teen sunbathing in her driveway last week suffered fatal injuries when her sister accidentally drove over her head.
Marli Hamblin, 15, was wearing headphones and listening to music Friday while lying on a blanket in the driveway of her home in Syracuse, Utah, Fox 13 reported. At around noon, Hamblin’s older sister backed out of the garage in a truck and, not realizing her sister was there, backed over the girl's head.
Hamblin suffered head injuries and died Sunday afternoon.

39 killed as airliner crashes near Tehran's Mehrabad Airport

A passenger plane has crashed in the vicinity of Iran's Mehrabad Airport, located in Tehran. Thirty-nine out of the 48 passengers and crew on board died in the tragedy.
The Iran-140 Sepahan Air jetliner had barely left the airport, crashing shortly after takeoff on the outskirts of the capital at 09:45 (05:15 GMT) on Sunday, according to Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency. ]

California Lightning Hits 14; 2 Critically Injured

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities now say 14 people – including a 15-year-old – have been struck by lightning during rare summer thunderstorms that have swept through Southern California, injuring two critically.
Los Angeles fire spokeswoman Katherine Main says 13 people, including the teen, were treated after they were struck Sunday afternoon at Venice Beach in Los Angeles. Four were treated at the scene and released, and the rest were taken to hospitals, where two are in critical condition.
Some appear to have been in the water and others on the beach’s famed boardwalk.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says a 14th person was struck on a golf course on Southern California’s Catalina Island. The 57-year-old man is reported in stable condition.

Nearly 400 Dead in 6.1 China Earthquake

(CNN) -- Troops joined rescue operations in Yunnan province, southwestern China Monday following a 6.1-magnitude earthquake but the search for survivors was hampered by rainfall and aftershocks.
At least 398 people have been killed, and 1,801 injured by the quake that struck on Sunday afternoon, state-run media has reported.
The quake struck at 4.30 p.m. local time (4.30 a.m. ET). The majority of the casualties occurred in the city of Zhaotong, Ludian County.
The epicenter of the quake was recorded in Longtoushan Township, 23 kilometers (14 miles) southwest of Zhaotong, and tremors were felt almost 200 miles away. Hundreds of aftershocks have been recorded following the initial tremor.
Beijing has allocated 600 million yuan ($97 million) for relief efforts, Xinhua reported Monday.

One Dead, 13 Injured in Rare Southern California Lightning Storm

A rare lightning storm struck packed Venice Beach, Calif., Sunday, killing a 20-year-old man and injuring up to 12 others, one critically, after the same storm had struck a person on Catalina Island.
Firefighters said a bolt of lightning hit the water and the electrical current then traveled, hitting swimmers and surfers.
"The fire department assessed a total of 13 patients, and transported a total of eight patients," Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Katherine Main said.

Powerful Earthquake Hits Fukushima, Japan; Tsunami Warning

TOKYO -- A 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Japan's northern coast near the nuclear power plant crippled in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The earthquake early Saturday triggered a small tsunami.
Japan's Meteorological Agency said the quake struck 6 miles below the sea surface off the coast of Fukushima, northeast of Tokyo.
A 20-centimeter tsunami reached the coast of Ishinomaki Ayukawa about 50 minutes after the quake. Smaller waves were observed at two other locations along the coast.
Changes to the shoreline, however, were not visible on television footages of NHK public broadcaster.
The agency issued tsunami advisory of up to 1 meter in Fukushima, Miyagi and Iwate prefectures along the Japanese northern coast.

6.9 Quake slams Mexico, Guatemala; at least 3 dead

GUATEMALA CITY (AP) - A magnitude-6.9 earthquake on the Pacific Coast jolted a wide area of southern Mexico and Central America Monday, killing at least three people while damaging homes, hospitals and churches.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit at 6:23 a.m. (7:23 a.m. EDT; 11:23 GMT) on the Pacific Coast 1 mile (2 kilometers) north-northeast of Puerto Madero, near the Guatemala border. It initially calculated the magnitude at 7.1 but later lowered the figure to 6.9.
Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina said a baby died when parts of the ceiling collapsed on the newborn in the San Marco medical center. He said there were reports of other deaths, but this was the only confirmed fatality in Guatemala. He added that there were 33 injuries.

Earthquake With Magnitude 8.0 Strikes off Coast of Alaska

A powerful magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska today, prompting officials to issue a tsunami warning for the state's coastal regions.
The quake, which shook an area about 15 miles from Little Sitkin Island, was initially deemed a 7.1 on the Richter scale before it was upgraded to an 8.0.
